L5R Situation Summary Part I: Player Characters

For today, here’s the first part of the situation summariesfor the Legend of the Five Rings game – character resources. This is the first pass-through on the notes. Given the number of sessions, I’ve likely forgotten some major items. The various players should feel free to point them out and post goals or possible manipulations. I would appreciate updated school information and any blackmail information you think should go under “special”.

Generally-available resources:

Allies: Kaitokasuto (the Celestial Kami of Travel and the Sea, a.k.a the “Kami of Vacations”), the Empress, the Hidori Family of the Dragon Clan, Riako (the Oracle of Fire), the Yogo Family of the Scorpion, the Naga, Doji Iken (the Senior Crane Imperial Ambassador), the (official) Evil Grand Vizier of the City of Jewels, Yogo Teruoko(the Jade Champion), and assorted Ancestor Spirits (rescued from Traitors Grove).

Can call in or exchange favors from: The Phoenix (preventing the corruption of the Elemental Masters, rescuing a Phoenix force for Senpet, defeating the Nightmare of the Phoenix), the Unicorn and Dragon (preventing a pointless Dragon-Unicorn war), the Mantis (achieving great clan status, partially discharged for some characters), and the Yogo Council (rescuing the council and much of the family).

.

Kochige (Sumo-Wrestler / Shugenja)

  • Friends and Allies: the Dragon Clan Champion, the Jade Champion, and his immediate family.
  • Notable Positions: Jade Magistrate, Guardian of the Northwest Borders, member of the Yogo Council, Runs/Owns a Geisha School (which, located at the developing commercial and diplomatic nexus of Toshi Ranbo and with favor-gaining techniques is gaiing influence fairly quickly),
  • Major Contacts: The Shadowcats, the Sparrow Clan, the Sultan of the City of Jewels, the Elder Gods of Senpet.
  • Can call in favors from:
  • Military Resources: As a member of the Yogo Council, Kochige ranks just below the Yogo Clan Daimyo, and can call on a substantial fraction of the Yogo Family military resources if they are needed.
  • Schools: Tamori Shugenja School, Lesser Elemental Puissance School, Spellcasting

Shigure (Bushi – Administrator)

  • Friends and Allies: The Cat and Panther Clans, the Seppun Guard (standing offer of membership), Neko Tobei (nephew, semi-existant ally from a possible future), Shosuro, Akodo-Tanji Sharaku(the lion clan administrative advisor in Toshi Ranbo), Kakita Motoko no Hazuki(crane clan administrative advisor in Toshi Ranbo)
  • Notable Positions: Chief governor of Toshi Ranbo, Provisioner of the Border Guard.
  • Major Contacts: the Crab Clan (offered membership at one point), the Crane Clan, the Lion Clan, the Guardian Oni of the Gates of Heaven, the Thunder Dragon, (apparently) Ryoshun (the Kami of Death), Imperial Tax Collectors and Bureaucracy,
  • Can call in favors from: the Crab (the March of the Crab, jade supplies).Shigure – thanks to his “free stuff” policy, trade agreements, and – can call in minor favors from, or at least stay in touch with, most of the major, minor, and trivial clans.
  • Special notes: Hosts a Naga delegation, can exert a fair amount of influence as a supplier of Jade, holds Shard-Of-The-Midnight-Heart, the Obsidian Blade of Shosuro, has access to the organization, cyphers, and communications signs of Fu Lengsmilitary and assassins, information on the secret passages in the imperial city and palace, and details on the poisons, potions, and antidotes used in the Thousand Years of Darkness. Thanks to Shigure’s abrasive personality, he often worked best through intermediaries. Since he examined his life, this may have been improving.
  • Military Resources: Shigure currently commands about 380 Yodatai Scouts (albeit technically on behalf of several others), 300 Ronin recruits, about 70 assorted allies/recruits from among the people who have tried to kill him, and several hundred additional Ashigaru and auxiliary forces. He has also recruited several Ronin Shugenja and has access to the Lens-of-Ra, a gaijin device for imbuing weapons with flame.

  • Can call in favors from:
  • Special Notes: While Alex has a small Fief, and commands its resources, his primary advantage is that his meandering through time has let him scatter prophecies around with the Nezumi, Dragon, Phoenix, and Crane. This has let him set up an enormous number of Contingencies (Q.V.)
  • Schools: Dragon Clan Courtier, Spellcasting, Naga and Gaijin Magics.

Michio (Bushi – Mastersmith – Annihilator)

  • Friends and Allies: His family.

  1. the Dream Dragon,
    …*facepalm*
    *plots*

    several chieftains among the Yobanjin,
    Why?

Zareth Eleris, Ogun of the Silver Twilight.
Who are these people again? Or is this one person?

    Seer of Waterside Village.
Is this the name of that fief he got originally?

Major Contacts: The Shadowcats, the Elder Gods of Senpet. The Patriarchy of Merenae.
I’m not sure I understand your criteria for specific contacts.

around with the Nezumi, Dragon, Phoenix, and Crane. This has let him set up an enormous number of Contingencies (Q.V.)
What does that actually mean? I presume it has something to do with my not having defined something prevously. :)

  2. Remember: Alex’s memory is faulty. He spent years wandering through time and space and does not recall most of that period.

He left “prophecies” with the pre-imperial Nezumi, the Dragon, the Pheonix, the Yobanjin, in Merenea (which is where he got the local money for that ship), and in other places.

Zareth and Ogun date from that period as well: they are not native to Rokugan’s dimension and may or may not become involved at some point: it depends on how much you meddle with the Orrery of Dream.

Waterside Village is past the northern mountains on the edge of what used to be the desert. Alex spent a good deal of time there meditating, fixing local problems, and purging himself of Madness. You may have missed the name though. The locals are used to Shamans and tend to label any spellcaster a “Seer”.

Major Contacts are those you’ve had more-or-less friendly dealings with in the past and are potentially very useful in the future. Alex dealt with both the Elder Gods and the Shadowcats during his wandering period. If you want to probe that time, you do have spells powerful enough to stir up those memories.

Contingencies are on Page 33 of the campaign booklet, left hand column, halfway down.

  3. On my notes there, I have some questions.

You list several major “organizational” contacts, but some of those I’ve never had any serious dealings with and others I don’t even know how to contact.

Well, yes, I can call in favors from anyone. That’s because I have the Favors: Courtier ability. Heh. What “Free Stuff” policy are you talking about? I have been trying to us my ability to supply jade, but right now it seems to be totally useless.

Also, I’m almost broke since you never let me replenish my cash fund or let me know how the taxes/trades are doing.

Other than that, and what you answered Danielle, I’m good. (Wait, wasn’t it Ambiru Ryuko?)

  4. Well let’s see:

    (1) Implies questions, but doesn’t actually ask one: which organizations? Are you asking which may have some goodwill and why? (Getting in touch to exploit such goodwill is another question of course).

    (2) “Free Stuff”: Not applying any form of local taxes or fees on trade or the use of “public” facilities (docking fees, etc), providing delegation headquarters gratis, playing host without requesting that they play host in turn, and so on. All good for minor favors.

    (3) Since you mention it, as soon as you have time, we can go over the accounts and I’ll put up an accounting. Taxes wern’t very good this year of course: the area was pretty well devastated. They should improve. It’s not really very important of course. Remember where you got the “money” to pay the back taxes originally?

    (4) Either Amvir or Ambir (apparently depending on how the player felt like spelling it at the moment) from the old combat sheets and charcter sheet.

  5. Believe me, money is not a concern. If you need more, just ask. It’s going to be food, men, allies, weapons, and armor that are going to be in short supply. But considering our source of money, money isn’t a concern.
