Khaibitu, Mantis-Valkyrie

This is another of Clint Thomas Walker’s (1980-2008) old characters – Khaibitu-em-Betu-Tuf, originally a Mantis Spirit with a human mindprint, later a Valkyrie.

Under the point-buy rules, Insect Spirits were playable; they just had to have a human mindprint – presumably resulting from a failure to fully digest the original human spirit for some reason – that cut them off from the insect metaplanes, and thus from the ability to summon more insect spirits, to grow in power by consuming other spirits, to share minds with other spirits, and from normal “friendly” relationships with other insect spirits. Clint wanted to play one (although he later admitted to being taken aback by my looking over the most horrendous character he could come up with like it was nothing special and only making a few minor changes

The original notion didn’t last long. Khaibitu’s human host had originally worked as a secretary for Knight-Errant Security – and Khaibitu simply strolled on in and attempted to explain and stay on the job. Naturally enough, no one was willing to simply take the word of an admitted insect spirit that “she was different!”, so they locked her up for examination and called in some consultants.

One of them soon came up with an idea: He designed as “astral blast” spell resembling a normal “elemental blast” spell that targeted insect spirits, and only insect spirits, in an extended radius. They then got backing from several organizations, advertised excellent pay for a days work – with a guarantee of pre-approval rights – from every magician on earth with an allied spirit.

That easily gave their mage a big enough power boost so that a “Magic Rating x 10 meter radius” area of effect blanketed the globe – along with a couple of hundred thousand extra dice to “roll”. They made a great many special arrangements to protect their test subject – possible only because she was no longer truly an insect spirit – and wiped out every insect spirit on the globe in one fell swoop.

Eventually, they let Khaibitu out for observation – and she promptly hooked up with an Ace (a class-A physical adept) who believed that he was Thor (and was apparently indeed drawing on a free spirit with the same belief). Thanks to a near-death experience at the borders of space, a mindlink gone bad, and some serious magical confusion, Khaibitu wound up linked to the powers of the major free spirits who made up the “Norse Pantheon” – and was thus reborn (and tweaked a bit) as a Valkyrie.

   Basic Priorities; Race A (Spirit Hybrid/Valkyrie – a “Flesh-Form” spirit), Attributes B (“Force” 4), Magic C (Effectively “B”, a sorcerer-adept), Skills D (30 Points) – and Resources E (5000 NY).

Edges; Five extra attribute points (5), four extra force points (2), Karma Acquisition (May earn up to 1 point of karma per session to spend on new skills and spells, 5), Special Patron (Odin, 3), Summoning Power (Wind/Horse Spirits, 5). Total; 20 Points.

Flaws; Recognized by magi as a Handmaiden Of Death (-3), Previously Known as an Insect Spirit (-2), gets No Initial Contacts (-2), “Uncouth” (Alien, -2), Dark Secret (-2), Bio-Rejection (-2), Overprotective Father (Adopted by Odin, -2), Spirit Energy linked to energy of the norse pantheon (-5). Total; -20 Points.

-Due to prior events, the character has earned the enmity of the insect spirits. Since there aren’t any left, this does not count for points.

Powers : Weapon Manifestation (At will. Str+2(S) for HTH types, Str(M) for ranged types and Str-4(L) for area-effect types), Empathic Control (Force vrs will, to influence emotions within a (Force) meter radius), Enhanced Senses (+1 perception in general and has weird psychic sensitivities), Astral Gateway, Aura Masking, Sense The Dying (Can sense those who are about to, or have, died, where their spirits should go, and so on. In general, knows when it’s time for people to die).

Weakness : As handmaiden of death, various duties are demanded of valkyries. They are expected to collect the dying and use their “Astral Gateway” power to send them onwards. Valkyries are also notoriously vulnerable to noble heroes, pathetic children, and so on, playing upon their special sensitivities. As with all “free spirits” they have “true names” that can be used by any would-be binder, get no karma except what others freely donate, and have no “rights”. As these difficulties are inherent in being a spirit, they get no points for them. (On the other hand, they need not pay for the special powers either).
