Exalted – The Files of Charles Dexter Ward, The Inugami

The Inugami are rather unspectacular for enchanted creatures; they’re simply large-breed anthropomorphic dogs, albeit with solid-color eyes and metallic claws. As usual for Charles’s aides, they’re created via the Imbue Amalgam spell with the donor-assistance of Ixiah and some animals to provide relevant abilities (for the first one), and Charles’s earlier creations (for the later ones, since there were some charms that Ixiah didn’t want to share and he didn’t want to bother with it more than once). Unlike the Coatl, the Inugami are usually only found at Charles’s manse, where no one is likely to notice – or remark on – their presence.

Despite their new form – and enhanced intelligence – the Inugami are still basically canines; they enjoy eating (primarily meat, greasy starches, and dairy products), and physical games. They’re territorial and very loyal to their group and to their creator. They usually split their time between sleeping, projects, and playful picnics. Where there are Inugami, you can usually find grilling and roasting meat (and terribly unhealthy side dishes), assorted games with balls (played with much enthusiasm, if only moderate skill), and general chaos. They’re usually pretty welcoming as long as you’re no threat to the pack or to their master.

Due to their various physical boosts, the Inugami are competent combatants – but, if it comes to a physical confrontation, they’ll send in copies generated via Host of Spirits first. For the most part, they’re subordinate artificers: for which purposes they – thanks to their use of solar charms and high skills – count as assisting celestial exalts.

Due to their access to Charles’s specialized charms, they’re also formidable thaumaturgists and even know a few Terrestrial spells – enough to make them fairly dangerous in a fight, to lay wards and illusions around the manse, and to handle a lot of other minor tasks. They are vulnerable to Celestial Circle Countermagic, but only on an individual basis.

  • Spirit Charms from Ixiah: Amethyst Awareness, Host of Spirits, Principle of Motion, Dematerialize, Psychokinesis, and Essence Bond.
    • There are a couple of Ixiah’s charms that would be INCREDIBLY convenient to include – such as Blessed Air Body and Domain Manipulation Scenario – but they’re really just too handy to put into an assistant.
  • Solar Charms from Charles: Terrestrial Circle Sorcery, First Occult Excellency, Spirit-Detecting Glance, The Laborer’s Word, The Engines of Creation, Awaking the Sleeping Serpent, The Radiant Indulgence of Gaia, and The Alchemists Inner Fire (produces three dots of internal Hearthstones).
  • Spells: Emerald Circle Countermagic and three chosen from Authochthonian Invocation, Casting the Circle, Impenetrable Frost Barrier, Focus of the Faithful, Peacock Shadow Eyes, Song of the Loa, Sphere of Purity, and Thunder Wolf’s Howl.

Mutations and Merits: Nightvision (from a cat, 1), Longevity (from a giant tortoise, base lifespan of 100 + [20 x Sta] years, 1), Enhanced Senses/+2 each Hearing, Sight, Smell, and Touch (from Ixiah, 4), Tail (a basic canine feature, +2 Athletics, 1), Wolf’s Pace (another basic canine feature, +2 Dex for movement, +2 Str for Jumping, 1), Luck 1 (1), The Embryonic Pearl-5 (from a cultist, +4 willpower/day, +4 Motes/Hour, 5), Echolocation (from a bat, 1), and four extra “-1” health levels (from any large animal, 4).

Imbue Amalgam does not actually address issues of gross physical form – such as giving a target creature wings – or adding other natural talents outside of weapons. On the other hand, that really does seems like it should be within the limits of the spell. Ergo, add “The sorcerer can grant the amalgam up to (Essence + Occult) dots worth of Merits or Mutations at a cost of two motes per dot” to the basic Imbue Amalgam spell description. As usual, however, an appropriate source for the traits to be added must be available.

Charles, of course, is using the Imbue Amalgam spell to collect traits and abilities for later use in other creations. All he needs to do is to get a creature to sit still for copying a trait once; once he has it in an amalgam, he can simply use the amalgam for a source later on.

Thanks to it’s Host of Spirits charm, an Inugami can create up to three copies of itself per action, up to a maximum of fifteen copies at a time, at a cost of 3 motes per copy. Such copies last until the end of the scene and are under their creators perfect mental control. They are extremely difficult to tell apart from the original; telling the difference requires a (Perception + [Awareness or Occult]) check with an external penalty of three. They have:

  • Abilities: Str 1, Dex 4, Sta 4, Chr 0, Man 0, App 4, Per 4, Int 4, and Wits 4.
  • Essence: 2
  • Dodge Value: 5, Parry Value: 5
  • Soak: 20/22B
  • Health Levels: -0, -1, -1, -1, -1.
  • Natural Weapons: Spd 4, Acc +10 (15d), Dam +9L (10L), Rate 2
  • Abilities: Athletics 2, Awareness 3, Craft (Items) 5, Dodge 4, Integrity 2, Investigation 1, Lore 5, Martial Arts 1, Occult 5, Presence 2, Resistance 3, Stealth 1, Survival 3 (Tracking +3). Specialities: Artifacts 2.
  • Mutations and Merits: Nightvision, Longevity, Enhanced Senses/+2 each Hearing, Sight, Smell, and Touch, Tail (+2 Athletics), Wolf’s Pace (+2 Dex for movement, +2 Str for Jumping), Luck 1, The Embryonic Pearl-5 (+4 willpower/day, +4 Motes/Hour), Echolocation, and four extra “-1” health levels.
