16: Common LAM Designs

Common LAM’s :

   While the original system only listed a couple of LAM designs, it seemed inevitable that several concepts would have been tried out – so here are eight standard LAM designs for players to choose from.

  • Weapons and Ammunition: Large Laser, Right Torso, 2 slots. 2x Medium Lasers, Right and Left Arms, 1 slot each. 2x Machine Guns, Right and Left Arms, 1 slot each, and 200 Machine Gun ammo in the Center Torso (1 slot, 1 ton).
  • Design Purpose; Aerospace cover and high-speed tactical support. Note that the LAM version of the basic Pheonix Hawk is 5 tons heavier, and an entirely distinct design. The standard versions aren’t LAM’s, and should not be treated as such.
  • LAM Pheonix Hawk-50 – Variants
    • Star League Version: Endo Steel, XL Engine, FF Armor (+15 points), 12 Double Heat Sinks, and a total weaponry revision; an Antimissile System with CASE and 2 tons of Ammo in the LA, 4 M. Pulse Lasers (RA, RT, LA, LT), an ER L. Laser (RT), Flamer (RA), and S. Laser (RCT). CP total; 1080.
    • While the clans – due to their genetic division between pilots and mechwarriors – never dabbled much in LAM design, that hasn’t kept a variety of tinkerers from trying; Retrofitted Clan Variant : While almost identical to the S. League version, this shifts the L. Laser to an ER PPC and the S. Laser to an ER model. They get the usual Clan improvements as well. 1280 CP.

  • Weapons and Ammunition: LRM10 Launcher, Left Torso, 2 slots, 12 LRM10 Ammo and CASE, Right Torso, 1 slot. Artemis IV FCS, Center Torso, 1 slot, Medium Pulse Laser Right Arm, 1 slot.
  • Design Purpose; Showpiece for the new Federated Commonwealth combined forces, fast-response support for standard Valkyrie forces. The LAM Valkyrie seems to be intended for deployment as a full company, allowing an ultrafast response to planetary incursions.
  • Features : Endo Steel, FF Armor. If the armor factor rule is used, this unit will mount a C3 slave.
    • Command Version/Standard : Double Heat Sinks, XL Engine, “Guardian” ECM Suite, maximum Armor, replace LRM10/CASE/Artemis system with an ER PPC and TAG. CP total; 816
    • Command Version/Armor Factor Rule XL Engine, C3 Command Computer, a Guardian ECM Suite, replace LRM10 with LRM5 (And appropriate Ammo), add a M. Laser. CP total; 776+C3
  • The design allows the M. Laser to be replaced with a C3 “slave”, thus linking an entire company.

  • Design Purpose; It’s a reasonably heavy weapons platform, which can swiftly “jet in” and provide fire support for other units. It’s not all that effective by itself, but is handy in larger operations.
    • Star League Version : Endo Steel, XL Engine, Ten Double Heat Sinks, Ultra AC/5, with 2 Tons of Ammo and CASE, LRM5/Artemis/CASE w’ 2 tons Ammo, ER PPC, S. Laser (RCT) and S. Laser (Head). CP total; 1124
    • Federated Commonwealth Version / Sleipnir: Endo Steel, XL Engine, Ten Double Heat Sinks, Arrow IV, 3 Tons Ammo and CASE, Guardian ECM Suite, 4x M. Lasers. The Mech may replace one of the M. Lasers with a C3 slave. CP Total; 1124, +C3 if used.
  • This isn’t a particularly practical design – unless you can afford to field a mutually supportive group of the things with TAG units. The price tag on that is probably out of the reach of anyone except one of the great houses.

    • Cargo Capacity; Seven Tons.
    • Guardian ECM Suite, 2 slots.
    • 3x Medium Lasers, Right and Left Arms, Center Torso, 1 slot each. 3x Small Lasers, Right Torso, Left Torso, Rear Center Torso, 1 slot each. TAG, Right Torso, 1 slot. Troop Comlinks, .5 tons, Left Torso, 1 slot.
  • Design Purpose; Somewhat bizarre. The WindSerpent is designed as an orbital shuttle, fully capable of dropping out of space undetected, unloading an infantry squad to go and get something while it stands guard – and blasting out again with whatever it came for aboard… It was never meant to defeat another `Mech in battle – although it can often do so with the help of it’s passangers. It’s notable that the cargo capacity can be expanded by simply removing the TAG system and/ or the RT/LT S. Lasers. The Mech has occasionally been used to get ammunition to other Vehicles and/ or `Mechs in battle.
  • Features : Endo Steel, FF Armor, Command/Communications system for use with carried troops – and an XL Engine. The “cargo” compartments are located in the torso areas.
  • The Fire Dragon variant mounts 10 Double Heat Sinks, allowing it to use a part of it’s cargo capacity for laser upgrades without a risk of roasting it’s passengers… It has a CP total of 780.
